Adrian’s knees gave out completely.
The arrogant, untouchable CEO collapsed onto the polished marble floor. He dropped to his knees, weeping hysterically, tears and snot running down his face, completely ruining his expensive suit.
He reached out a trembling hand toward me.
“Sarah, please!” Adrian wailed, sobbing openly in front of his entire staff. “Please! I’m your husband! We can go to counseling! I’ll pay it back! Don’t let them take me! Please, they’ll ruin me!”
I stepped back, deliberately ensuring his outstretched, grasping fingers didn’t even brush the hem of my skirt.
“I was your wife, Adrian,” I whispered, staring down at him with eyes as cold, dark, and unforgiving as the bottom of the ocean. “But today, I am your auditor. Take your bags. Your new room is waiting.”
The police officers didn’t hesitate. They grabbed Adrian roughly by the arms, hoisting him to his feet and violently wrenching his hands behind his back. The sharp, metallic click of the handcuffs snapping shut echoed through the lobby like a gavel striking a block.
