Without warning, the distinct glow of flashing blue and red emergency lights filled her rearview mirror. A law enforcement patrol car had pulled up directly behind her, signaling for her to stop immediately. Victoria, knowing she had done nothing wrong, calmly pulled over to the gravel shoulder, put her car in park, turned off the ignition, and rolled down her driver’s side window. A tall, broad-shouldered officer with a severe, cold expression strode up to her door, while his partner positioned himself slightly behind, eyeing her suspiciously through the open window.
When Victoria politely handed over her driver’s license and vehicle registration upon request, the lead officer engaged in a long, tedious inspection. He scrutinized the documents, paced around her car to inspect the frame, and glared back at her, completely unable to find a single infraction. Yet, instead of handing back her credentials, he held onto them tightly. When Victoria calmly asked for the legal reason behind the traffic stop, the officer dismissed her inquiry with a curt reference to a routine check. When she pushed further, reminding them that she had committed no violation and that neither officer had formally identified himself, the dynamic swiftly soured.
