I dropped the bundle of white lilies near the front tire of my Buick. One of the green stems snapped with a quiet pop against the gravel, the white petals dusting the dirt like spilled flour.
I got into the driver’s seat and pulled the door closed. The latch clicked twice, but the rusty bottom edge of the door stayed slightly ajar, letting in the cold draft.
My hand shook as I reached for the ignition. As I shifted my leg to find the pedal, a hard metal edge pressed against my thigh from the deep fold of the bench seat.
I reached down between the cracked vinyl cushions and pulled it out.
It was a heavy brass fountain pen with a tarnished blue barrel, its clip slightly bent from years of being carried in a shirt pocket. I held it up to the gray light of the windshield.
