I went to the small monitor in the office.
A green light was glowing.
The system was recording.
I exhaled slowly.
Even if Michael attempted to invent another version of events, there was a record of what had happened.
A few minutes later, I heard a distant sound.
At first, it was only a low hum rising through the hills.
Then it became unmistakable.
Sirens.
They grew louder as they approached the road.
I looked through the front window and saw Harry’s dark pickup coming from the county highway. Two marked sheriff’s cruisers followed him.
Harry had come through.
The vehicles stopped behind the concrete truck, preventing Michael from moving it backward. Harry climbed out of his pickup first. His expression was serious and focused.
Four sheriff’s deputies stepped from the cruisers. They approached cautiously, prepared for the possibility that the situation might escalate.
Michael must have seen them in his mirrors.
