Underneath, I found a loose floorboard. I pried it open, revealing a small wooden box, its surface etched with a simple flower.
Inside lay a stack of photographs, a medical report, and a sealed envelope. I opened the envelope, the paper thin and brittle.
The document was a death certificate, but the cause of death was listed as “unknown”. A note from the doctor, Dr. Hernández, read:
Patient exhibited symptoms inconsistent with any known illness. Further investigation required. Autopsy pending.
My heart pounded. The truth was more horrifying than I had imagined. Rosa had not died from an illness; she had been murdered.
Behind the photographs, a small USB drive sat, labeled “Final”. I took it, my hands shaking.
Back at home, I plugged the drive into the laptop. A video began to play, grainy and shaky. Rosa’s face was pale, eyes wide with fear.
She whispered, “If you’re watching this, it means they tried to silence me. Arturo… he was involved. He didn’t kill me, but he covered it up. The women he trafficked, the children he sold… I discovered it. He threatened me. I hid the proof here. Please, expose him. For the girls, for all of us.”
