“How long will you need to collect your things?”
Samuel entered before I could respond.
He carried a leather folder and a narrow silver box.
There was no visible will.
Vivian frowned.
“Where are the documents?”
“We will proceed in the order your father requested.”
Samuel placed the silver box in front of me.
“This is for Claire.”
Vivian laughed.
“A farewell gift?”
I lifted the lid.
Inside lay three objects.
A photograph.
A handwritten letter.
And a tiny silver baby bracelet engraved with the initials C.B.
My chest tightened.
The photograph showed me at the museum gala on the night Harrison and I met.
I was standing behind the velvet curtain, laughing with my shoes in one hand.
I had never seen it before.
On the back, Harrison had written:
The first moment she forgot to be afraid.
“What is that bracelet?” Lucas asked.
“I don’t know.”
