I Married a Wealthy Man 30 Years Older Because I Was Tired of Struggling—After His Funeral, His Lawyer Handed Me a Silver Box and Said, “He Made Sure You Got Exactly What You Deserved”

Vivian turned toward me.

“You planned this from the moment you saw him.”

For the first time, I did not lower my eyes.

“I planned to finish my shift.”

“You married a dying old man.”

“He was not dying when we met.”

“You trapped him with a baby.”

“I didn’t know I was pregnant.”

“How convenient.”

I picked up Harrison’s letter.

“You don’t have to believe me.”

“Oh, I don’t.”

“But he did.”

Her face twisted.

“You admitted you married him because you were poor.”

I married him because I was tired and afraid,” I said. “I won’t lie about that. At first, I thought safety might be enough.”

Vivian gave a bitter laugh.

“There. Finally.”

“But it stopped being about safety.”

I looked at the photograph of myself laughing behind the curtain.

“If Harrison had lost the company, I would have stayed. If we had moved into my old apartment, I would have stayed. If he had lived another twenty years with nothing but his stubbornness and burned toast, I would have stayed.”
