Carmen reached into her purse and pulled out a small, worn leather notebook. She set it on the table.
Veronica’s confidence flickered.
“I may be old, Veronica,” Carmen said, her voice ringing clear and steady through the room, “but I kept my own ledger. For eleven months, I wrote down every single dollar you gave us, every time you took our credit cards, the night you forced us out of our bedroom, and every document you badgered my husband to sign.”
She opened the notebook to a marked page. “I have dates, times, and amounts. I know exactly how we have been treated in our own home.”
Veronica turned on her husband furiously. “Tell them, Derek! Tell them I was just trying to manage your family’s messy estate!”
Derek took a deep, shuddering breath. He looked at his mother, then at his father, and finally at his wife.
