“No, Veronica,” Derek said softly. “I used Mom and Dad’s money to cover my debts. I stayed quiet while you pushed them into the shed. I was a coward. But I am done lying for you.”
The silence in the dining room was absolute.
Inez stepped forward, placing a legal notice on the table. “Mrs. Vance, formal civil and criminal complaints regarding financial elder abuse, grand larceny, and document forgery will be filed with the Chatham County District Attorney’s office tomorrow morning. You have twenty four hours to pack your personal belongings and vacate this property.”
Veronica looked around the room, realizing her control had vanished entirely. Without another word, she turned and stormed upstairs.
Two days later, Veronica moved out of the house permanently. Derek chose to leave as well, moving into a small apartment near his new job at a local building supply firm.
Manuel was the one who made that decision.
