“Then you will be comfortable with an independent criminal referral.”
Adrian sat back down.
The room became very quiet.
Martin called for a recess.
Adrian followed me into the hallway.
“Naomi.”
I kept walking.
He caught my arm.
I stopped.
“Take your hand off me.”
He did.
His voice dropped.
“The twins.”
I looked at him.
“Not here.”
“Are you saying they’re not mine?”
“I am saying you should get a paternity test.”
His face twisted.
“Bianca says they are.”
“Then a test should reassure everyone.”
He looked toward the boardroom.
“She is terrified.”
“That is unfortunate.”
“You used to care about people.”
I stared at him.
“I still do.”
Then I added,
“That is why I did not throw two newborns into the middle of a screaming match.”
He flinched.
“I never meant for this to happen.”
“What part?”
He looked at me.
“The affair?”
Silence.
“The fraud?”
