My mom texted on my wedding day that they were skipping my “mistake,” but when I saw their family beach photo in Maui, I just replied, “Check your bank apps,” wiping out their funds and watching my dad come pounding on my door a week later.

The furious red in his face drained into a sickly gray.

The silence inside my condo became deafening.

My father stood frozen in the middle of the living room, all his earlier confidence gone.

The untouchable patriarch had disappeared, replaced by a frightened man watching his life’s work begin to collapse.
