My mom texted on my wedding day that they were skipping my “mistake,” but when I saw their family beach photo in Maui, I just replied, “Check your bank apps,” wiping out their funds and watching my dad come pounding on my door a week later.

“What… what audit?” he stammered, his voice barely above a whisper, lacking all of its previous thunder.

“The forensic audit I quietly commissioned three weeks ago,” I said, folding my arms across my chest. “The one that uncovered the fact that for the past four years, you haven’t just been running the family charter business—you’ve been systematically embezzling from the minor stakeholder trust funds to finance your luxury real estate investments in Florida and fund my brother’s gambling debts. Every single transaction, every forged signature, every shady offshore transfer—it’s all documented, notarized, and sitting on a federal prosecutor’s desk right now.”

My father stumbled backward until his knees struck the sofa.

He dropped onto the cushions and buried his face in his hands.

“You… you went to federal authorities? We’re your family!”

“Family?” The word tasted like ash in my mouth. “Is that what you call the people who abandon their only daughter on her wedding day, jet off to a private beach, and mock her in a group chat with the caption ‘True Family Only’? You made it abundantly clear who belongs to your inner circle. You drew the line, Dad. I just made sure you had to sleep in the bed you built.”
