I stared at her.
The absurdity of the sentence was almost breathtaking.
“That much?”
Her expression shifted.
“He told me he was going to cut a small section. Something symbolic.”
“Symbolic of what?”
She hesitated.
“Consequences.”
I felt cold.
“So you did know.”
“Yes.”
For once, she didn’t try to dodge.
I had to give her that.
“Why?”
“Because Daniel has been unhappy.”
“So he shaved my head?”
“He feels powerless in his own marriage.”
I stared at her.
“And you thought humiliating me would fix that?”
“No.”
Her eyes moved toward the stairs.
“I thought it would make you understand how serious things had become.”
I leaned against the doorframe.
“Eleanor, what exactly has Daniel told you?”
She stiffened.
“That you barely speak to him anymore.”
“Not true.”
“That you treat him like a dependent.”
“He is financially dependent on me.”
“That you make decisions without him.”
“Such as?”
