“Your promotion.”
I laughed once.
Not because anything was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“My employer offered me a promotion, Eleanor.”
“You accepted it without discussing the impact on your marriage.”
“I discussed it with Daniel for weeks.”
“He didn’t think you would actually take it.”
The sentence landed strangely.
I narrowed my eyes.
“Why?”
She looked away.
“Because he told me you were considering leaving the company.”
I stared at her.
“I never said that.”
“Well, that’s what he told me.”
“When?”
She hesitated.
“A few months ago.”
Something shifted inside me.
Not fear.
Not yet.
But attention.
“What else did he tell you?”
Eleanor folded her hands.
“That you were unhappy.”
“I have been.”
“That you might want to sell the house.”
I went still.
“I never said that.”
She looked at me.
“He said you wanted a fresh start.”
“When did he say this?”
