The representative placed me on hold.
Nathan stared at me.
Margaret sat down.
Rachel stood near the doorway, looking like she wanted to disappear.
Finally, the bank representative returned.
“There is a pending legal review attached to the property.”
I closed my eyes.
“What does that mean?”
“There is an application involving a secured loan.”
“When was it filed?”
The representative gave me a date.
Two weeks earlier.
The exact same date as the property transfer agreement.
I asked another question.
“Has anything been approved?”
“Not yet.”
My heart started beating faster.
“So the house is still legally mine?”
“As of today, yes.”
I breathed out.
For the first time that morning, I felt a tiny bit of relief.
The representative continued.
“But there is a problem.”
“What problem?”
“The signature authorization doesn’t appear to match the original ownership documents.”
I looked at Nathan.
He heard enough to understand.
