The bank representative told me they had flagged the paperwork.
My husband had made a mistake.
A huge one.
He had forged my signature badly enough that someone had noticed.
I thanked the representative and ended the call.
Nathan looked at me.
“You were going to lose the house,” I said.
“I was trying to save it.”
“You almost destroyed it.”
“I thought I could win the money back.”
“With gambling?”
He said nothing.
I laughed bitterly.
“You thought you could gamble our home back into existence?”
Margaret suddenly stood.
“Sofia, please don’t call the police.”
I stared at her.
“I didn’t say anything about police.”
She froze.
That told me everything.
She knew exactly how serious this was.
I picked up my phone.
Nathan’s face went pale.
“What are you doing?”
“Protecting myself.”
He stepped toward me.
“Sofia, don’t.”
I raised my hand.
“Stop.”
He stopped.
