It wasn’t Margaret.
It wasn’t Nathan.
It was someone I had never heard of.
Someone who had apparently been involved in Nathan’s financial dealings for months.
I walked back downstairs.
Nathan looked up.
“What?”
I held up my phone.
“Who is Daniel Mercer?”
His face changed instantly.
Margaret stood.
“Where did you hear that name?”
I stared at them.
That reaction was enough.
“You know him.”
Neither spoke.
“Who is Daniel Mercer?”
Nathan looked at his mother.
Margaret whispered:
“Don’t tell her.”
My heart sank.
I stepped closer.
“What don’t you want me to know?”
Nathan closed his eyes.
And then he said something that changed everything.
“Daniel isn’t my partner.”
I frowned.
“Then who is he?”
Nathan looked at me.
“He’s the man who owns the debt.”
I felt cold.
“What debt?”
Nathan swallowed.
“The debt I took out before we got married.”
