She Shaved My Head to Make Me Quit My Job—Then I Discovered What My Husband Was Hiding

“And I was your wife when your mother put clippers against my head.”

Silence.

I took a breath.

“But I am not your financial plan.”

He slowly lowered his hands.

“I love you.”

I nodded.

“I believe you.”

His eyes widened.

“You do?”

“Yes.”

Then I said:

“But love doesn’t erase debt.”

He looked away.

“Love doesn’t erase lies.”

I picked up my bag.

“And love doesn’t require me to destroy myself to keep you comfortable.”

I walked toward the door.

“Where are you going?”

“To a hotel.”

“You’re leaving?”

“For tonight.”

He stood.

“Please don’t.”

I stopped.

Then turned around.

“I’ll come back tomorrow.”

He looked relieved.

“But tomorrow, we’re going to have a different conversation.”

“What conversation?”

“The one we should have had eighteen months ago.”

I walked downstairs.

Margaret was standing in the kitchen.

She looked at me.

“Are you really going to leave my son?”
