I opened a new account.
Transferred my next paycheck arrangements.
Changed my passwords.
Removed saved banking information from every device.
Then I called my bank.
I explained that I had discovered unauthorized financial activity connected to my information.
The representative told me what documents I needed to provide.
I wrote everything down.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I wanted control of my own life again.
When I hung up, Nathan was sitting silently on the bed.
“You’re really doing this.”
“Yes.”
“What happens to me?”
I looked at him.
“I don’t know.”
“You’re my wife.”
“I was your wife when you lost your job.”
He looked down.
“I was your wife when you started borrowing money.”
He said nothing.
“I was your wife when you opened a secret account.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I was your wife when you rented another woman’s apartment.”
He covered his face.
