He started crying.
“I love you.”
I felt tears form in my own eyes.
That sentence would have destroyed me a year ago.
That morning, it didn’t.
“You loved what I provided.”
“That isn’t true.”
“You loved the house.”
“You loved the lifestyle.”
“You loved having someone who would fix everything.”
He shook his head.
“I love you.”
I looked at him for a long moment.
Then I said:
“Then you should have protected me when your mother put clippers against my head.”
He had no answer.
Rachel quietly picked up her bag.
“I should go.”
I nodded.
She walked toward the door.
Before she left, she stopped beside me.
“I am sorry.”
I looked at her.
“You were lied to too.”
She nodded.
Then she left.
The front door closed.
Margaret looked at me.
“What are you going to do?”
I looked at her.
“I haven’t decided.”
